est le premier single interprété par Aaliyah pour son premier album studio,
Age Ain't Nothing but a Number
La chanson a été écrite et produite par R. Kelly, et les paroles parlent de l'excitation d'une adolescente à l'idée de faire la fête le week-end avec ses amis. "Back and Forth" a été décrite comme une chanson dance/pop/R&B et new jack swing. Aaliyah chante dans un style "décontracté".
Blackground et Jive ont sorti la chanson en tant que premier single de l'album le 8 avril 1994, avec des critiques généralement positives, de nombreux critiques faisant l'éloge du contenu lyrique
de la chanson et de la voix d'Aaliyah sur l'album.
Sur le plan commercial, "Back & Forth" s'est bien comportée, atteignant la cinquième place du Billboard Hot 100 aux États-Unis pour la semaine se terminant le 2 juillet 1994. La chanson a connu le même succès au Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, où elle est arrivée en tête la semaine se terminant le 21 mai 1994,
passant au total trois semaines à la première place du classement.
La chanson est également arrivée en tête du top 40 Rhythmic la semaine se terminant le 9 juillet 1994. Le 9 juin 1994, la chanson a été certifiée disque d'or
par la Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Vers la fin de l'année 1994, Billboard a rapporté que la chanson s'était vendue à plus de 700 000 exemplaires.
Au niveau international, "Back & Forth" a connu un succès modéré, atteignant la 16e place du top 20 du classement officiel britannique. Toujours au Royaume-Uni, la chanson s'est classée dans le top 20, à la 16e place, de l'Official Dance Chart. Ailleurs en Europe, la chanson s'est classée dans le top 40, à la 38e place, aux Pays-Bas.
Le clip de la chanson a été réalisé par Millicent Shelton dans la ville natale d'Aaliyah, Detroit.
La vidéo a été tournée dans le lycée d'Aaliyah et, le jour du tournage, de nombreux adolescents locaux ont été recrutés pour jouer dans plusieurs scènes de la vidéo.
"Back & Forth" a été décrite comme une chanson dance, pop et R&B. Quinn Peterson de Jet l'a qualifiée de New Jack Swing[7]. Quinn Peterson de Jet a qualifié la chanson de "new jack swing". Sur la chanson, Aaliyah chante avec une "voix subtile et décontractée" tout en parlant de faire la fête avec ses amis pendant le week-end. Selon Billboard, "Peu importe qu'Aaliyah ait 15 ans. C'est le putain de week-end, bébé, alors elle ramène ses copines - vraisemblablement dans sa jeep - et va faire la fête dans le coin".
Interrogée sur l'orientation lyrique de la chanson, Aaliyah a déclaré :
"Ce n'est pas une chanson sur l'amour ou quoi que ce soit d'autre ; il s'agit d'aller à une fête et de s'amuser. J'ai des chansons sur l'amour, les béguins ou autres, mais cette chanson parle de danse. Cet album parle des adolescents et de ce qu'ils vivent".
Entertainment Weekly a décrit la chanson comme une "invitation torride à danser toute la nuit", Aaliyah demandant de "laisser la mélodie funky vous mettre dans l'ambiance".
